Rejuvenate your appearance and relieve eye discomfort with eyelid surgery

Eyelids that droop. Wrinkles that deepen, or puffiness that gives a tired appearance, can not only affect appearance, but also make daily life uncomfortable. Fortunately, eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, offers an effective solution to both aesthetic and functional complaints around the eyes.

This surgical procedure focuses on removing excess skin and fatty tissue to restore a fresher, more youthful look. But it goes beyond just appearance: rejuvenating the eyelids sometimes also fixes practical problems such as decreased vision or headaches. Eyelid surgery is an investment in both your appearance and well-being.

What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also called a blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that focuses on removing or relocating excess skin and fatty tissue around the eyes. The result? A fresher, more youthful appearance that not only rejuvenates you visually, but also addresses functional complaints.

‍With drooping upper and lower eyelids, this procedure can work wonders not only for improving appearance, but also for alleviating functional problems. These symptoms can range from decreased vision and headaches to the heavy, tired feeling in the eyes.

Over time, the skin loses its elasticity, which causes the eyelids to droop. What at first seemed like a purely aesthetic problem may eventually manifest into physical discomfort. This is because the eyelids play an important role in protecting the eyes and regulating our vision.

Thus, eyelid surgery not only offers rejuvenation of the appearance, but also fixes practical problems, allowing you to both see and feel better.

Types of eyelid surgery

Upper eyelid surgery

Graceful underlining.
Upper eyelid surgery is usually performed in an outpatient setting, unless it is part of a combined rejuvenation treatment. The procedure usually takes about 45 minutes.

During the procedure, excess skin tissue is carefully marked so that the scar falls neatly into the natural crease of the upper eyelid after surgery.

In most cases, this involves removing excess skin, but if necessary, fatty tissue may also be removed or repositioned where necessary.

Lower eyelid surgery

Lower eyelid surgery focuses primarily on reducing puffiness and skin wrinkles.

Dr. Van Genechten always employs a technique that does not incise the sphincter muscle around the eye, which means there is usually no visible scarring left behind.

This technique provides subtle results without the signs of surgery. In some cases, skin texture or limited excess skin is corrected with laser treatment or minimal skin excision.

In addition, fat compartments under the eyes are repositioned or removed to create a fresh and youthful appearance. If necessary, the transition between the eyelids and the upper fat compartments of the cheek is touched up with fat transfer, using fat from the abdomen or thigh.

This technique creates a more harmonious facial structure and natural volume distribution.

Combination of upper and lower eyelid surgery

Graceful underlining.
Sometimes upper and lower eyelid surgery are performed at the same time, depending on your specific needs and facial features.

An upper eyelid correction is also often combined with a brow recontouring or brow reset procedure.

It is important to evaluate the forehead, eyebrows and eyelids together to arrive at the optimal treatment plan.

These areas work together to determine the appearance of your face, and by treating them in combination, a natural and balanced result is achieved. Your personal expectations and facial features will guide this process.

Who is an ideal candidate for eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery is an excellent option for people who want to act on the following problems:

Skin excess on the upper or lower eyelids

Wrinkles around the eyes that give a tired appearance

Restrictions in vision due to overhanging skin on the upper eyelids

Bags under the eyes that create a puffy or tired look

Undesirable volume distribution in the upper or lower task members that disrupt the facial profile

Criteria

A potential candidate for eyelid surgery should meet certain criteria to ensure optimal results and a smooth recovery period:

No smoking

It is important that smokers quit at least 6 weeks before and after surgery, as smoking can delay healing.

Avoid alcohol

It is also not recommended to consume alcohol before and after surgery, as it can hinder the recovery process and cause complications.

Medical conditions

The ideal candidate for eyelid surgery is someone who is in good physical and mental health.

Recovery

After both upper and lower eyelid surgery, there may be significant swelling and discoloration, especially if fillers were previously injected into this area. The sutures are usually removed after 7 days, after which you will quickly notice improvement. During the first 1 to 2 weeks, the swelling and discoloration will slowly decrease, after which most patients can return to their daily activities. Within 2 months, the final results will be visible, when the skin has fully recovered.

‍The
goal of eyelid surgery is to give the skin around the eyes a younger, tighter appearance, improve volume distribution and correct any vision limitations caused by drooping eyelids. The result is a fresh and bright look that makes a difference both aesthetically and functionally.

Results

A facial rejuvenation surgery is a choice you make for yourself, not for the outside world.
It is a decision that matures in silence, taken in front of the mirror, not in front of the spotlight.

In our practice, discretion is a given. Privacy is not a detail, but a foundation.
The vast majority of our patients consciously choose not to make their results public. What you see here is exceptional.

Only a small number of patients gave us permission to show their result. Out of respect for their trust and generosity, we want to explicitly name that. They help others make an informed choice.

These images are not a showcase, but a discreet compass, honest and invaluable.

What are the risks of eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure, and as with any surgery, there are always certain risks and possible complications. While most patients do not experience any problems, it is important to be fully informed about the benefits, risks and limitations of the procedure.

Your doctor will discuss all possible complications with you, but it may be helpful to bring up any concerns or specific complications you have heard about yourself.

Some risks often mentioned in the medical literature include:

  • Infection
  • Post-bleeding
  • Insufficient scar healing
  • Numbness or changes in the sensitivity of the treated area
  • Dry eyes
  • Complications related to anesthesia
  • Temporary or permanent changes in vision
Does eyelid surgery hurt?

During the procedure, you will be locally anesthetized so you will not experience any pain. If general anesthesia is chosen, you will be completely painless and not notice anything about the procedure.

During the recovery period, you may experience little to no discomfort with the prescribed pain medication.
